Description

This graph illustrates to what extent the former Australian Prime Minister, William Hughes, the 1919 Paris Peace Conference and Australia's subsequent mandatory rule of Papua New Guinea featured in Australian newspapers. During Hughes' involvement at the Paris Peace Conference, he garnered considerable coverage within the Australian Press, almost equal to the number of articles pertaining to him in late WWI. During the inter-war period, his prominence, although diminished when compared to WWI and the 1919 Peace Conference, remained. Interestingly, issues in Papua New Guinea generated significant Australian media attention from the early 1920s until the beginning of WWII. In contrast to both William Hughes and New Guinea, articles on the 1919 Paris Peace Conference remained relatively low during the conference itself and in the years following.
